The Barranco Wall is located on the southern base of Kibo, which was formed as a result of volcanic activities and a landslide around 150,000 to 200,000 years ago. It is a portion of the climb that does require a little bit technicality in a few areas and it takes 1-2 hours to reach the top of the wall which is 4200m. As you are climbing the wall you pass a famous area known as “The kiss rock”, this reference is made because of the narrowness of the trail at this point. Hiking up through the kiss rock is not difficult, it can be a little bit intimidating.
So, the hike to the Barranco wall begins from the Barranco camp. After some leisure and taking Kilimanjaro photos, you proceed to climb to the Karanga Camp, or to Barafu Camp, it depends on your Kilimanjaro package duration. For those travelers who chose 7 days Machame route Kilimanjaro tour, they will proceed to Karanga camp. It is well known that those people who book a Kilimanjaro trek for 6 days in Machame will step up directly to the base camp, Barafu camp.
