We call it Great Rift Valley trekking, a nature walking safari from Ngorongoro highlands, Empakai Crater to Lake Natron via the base of Oldonyo Lengai. This is a flexible travel adventure that has an option for a 4 x 4 gamedrive in the Ngorongoro Crater. All in all, off the beaten path safari features wildlife habitats and allows visitors to watch fauna and flora in their natural areas, also people and culture like the Maasai nomadic community.
Itinerary Plan
Day 01: Ngorongoro Conservation Area – Empakai Crater Hiking Experience
After breakfast, depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a scenic 3‑hour drive from Arusha. Upon arrival at the Ngorongoro Gate, you will register and continue toward the Empakai Crater. Our cook will set up the tents and prepare meals while you begin your guided hiking and walking safari with an armed Ngorongoro ranger. You will be provided with lunch boxes and bottled drinking water. In the late afternoon, return to Empakai Campsite to relax and enjoy the sunset.
Day 02: Donkey-Assisted Walking Safari with Maasai Warrior Guide
After breakfast, your cook will prepare lunch boxes and drinking water for the day. Begin your trek through the Ngorongoro wilderness, accompanied by donkeys carrying supplies such as water, food, tents, and other essentials. Enjoy a unique cultural and natural experience as you walk alongside a Maasai warrior guide. Overnight at Acacia Camp.
Day 03: Trek to the Base of Oldonyo Lengai – Transfer to Lake Natron
After breakfast, continue trekking toward the base of Oldonyo Lengai, the sacred active volcano of the Maasai. Upon arrival near Lake Natron, you will meet your safari vehicle and drive to Lake Natron Giraffe Eco Lodge or Lake Natron Camp. Spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring the dramatic landscapes of Lake Natron. Visit the Lake Natron shores, a Ramsar site and East Africa’s most important flamingo breeding ground.
Day 04: Engaresero Waterfall Hike – Return to Arusha
After breakfast, explore the stunning Engaresero Waterfall, hiking through narrow gorges and refreshing natural pools. Return to the lodge for lunch before beginning your journey back to Arusha City. Overnight at your hotel.
